Thorncombe is a wonderful area for walkers - you can set off in any direction and be confident that you will have a rewarding circular walk. There are rich collections of wild flowers in the hedgerows, and the combination of sun-drenched fields, shady lanes and damp woods is particularly inviting. The Trust has published a total of ten circular walks from Thorncombe. These are available in two packs priced £2.50 each. They are available from the Village Shop, at members meetings or by contacting us via e-mail by clicking here. An easy and varied local walk is one that includes the historically interesting remains of Chaffeigh Mill. If you value our wonderful West Dorset
countryside you obviously want to disturb it as little as
possible when out walking. During spring birds can well be
sitting on nests at ground level and can be frightened
permanently away from their young. Water birds may be on
ponds and lakes again with young. These birds are so
vulnerable and deserve our protection. Deer produce young in May, the young are then left unguarded for hours on end in long grass or woodland while their mothers graze. It is because of these animals that it is essential to plan and control your walk, never let your dog be out of sight running wild. As a rule it is sensible never to walk in woods with a dog off the lead during the months of May, June and early July. Obviously keep away from pheasant pens, cattle and sheep at all times, a farmer will give you no second chance if your dog chases stock. If cattle threaten you, let your dog off the lead, it will escape the field and you will be much less likely to be chased.
