In March 2010 a  Great Bustard was seen at
Chard Junction Nature Reserve
.

These amazing birds were recently re-introduced on Salisbury Plain and had their first successful fledging last year - the first time since 1832!
This particular bird has been seen at Chard Junction, while 3 others spent some of the winter on the Somerset Levels.

If you're a keen bird-watcher and are not too sure what bird you've seen, try the easy to use bird identifier, or have a look on the A-Z of birds pages of the RSPB website.

Life in the Synderford

In 2004 Dr Nigel Merrett  Thorncombe resident, noted oceanographer and fish expert, along with his wife Colleen, made some fascinating observations of life in the Synderford River.

For the first time we can print this article in its entirety, and, once having read it I can assure you that you will look on (and in) the Synderford in a very new way.

Look at our page on Chard Junction Nature reserve

There is a colony of sand-martins nesting in the reserve, last year a pair of ringed plovers nested there and the record book in the hide makes interesting reading. The total number of bird varieties seen so far  total 116 (as at January 2011) - the complete list is being updated regularly.

Butterflies - take a look at our new page.
