Thorncombe Village Trust was formally established when its constitution was adopted in 1986. It has three main objectives: The first is to promote a greater interest in the local environment. This it aims to achieve by arranging bi-monthly talks given by invited speakers in the Village Hall. The topics covered range from the flora and fauna of the countryside, the history of the area, architecture, building conservation, geology, gardening and many others. These meeting are well attended and are open to all who are interested. These have been supplemented over the years by periodically publishing magazine and news letters for the members.

The second objective is to strive to protect the historic buildings in the parish and to conserve the character of the village and parish by resisting any unsuitable building or development. Our efforts, together with those of the Parish Council, have so far been successful in preserving the village and parish from over development and maintaining its unique character in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (A.O.N.B). The third objective is to conserve and enhance the countryside and to support nature conservation. To this end the Trust maintains membership of the Dorset Wildlife Trust and the Council for the Protection of Rural England.. It is also very active in the rearing and planting of native species of trees in the verges of the parish and on other land where permission has been obtained. The present membership currently covers over 130 families in the parish and outside and is open to anyone who is interested in furthering the objects of the Trust.
